The Bradan Collective

Wisdom and strategy for shifting tides

The thinking partner for leaders navigating complexity.

Whether you are making decisions no one else can make for you, building a business that needs to outgrow what it has been, or taking a seat at a board table where the questions are hard, you need someone who has been in those rooms.

That is what The Bradan Collective offers.

How we work together

Executive Coaching

Executive Coaching & Leadership Mentoring

Because it is lonely being a leader.

A confidential space to think, challenge, and decide. For senior leaders who carry more than they can share with anyone around them.

Fractional FD

Fractional Finance Director

For the financial decisions your business has never faced before.

Senior financial thinking at the moment your business needs it most, and the capability left behind when the work is done.

Governance

Governance & Board Advisory

For the board seat that values expertise as much as experience.

Independent governance expertise for boards and audit committees where technical depth matters.

Succession

NextGen Board Advisory & Succession

Coaching is the first step in succession planning. The governance work comes next.

For founders and family businesses facing the transition that changes everything.

A note on how this works

Every engagement begins with a conversation. No pitch, no proposal, no obligation. Just an honest discussion about what you are navigating and whether The Bradan Collective is the right fit.

If it is, we will know. If it is not, I will tell you.

I work with a small number of clients at any one time. That is a deliberate choice. It means every engagement gets my full attention and a solution that is built around you, not adapted from something else.

Based in Ireland. Working across the island and beyond.

What others say

"I worked with Denise over more than twenty years, through financing rounds, restructuring projects, and periods of significant change at Lakeland. That kind of relationship tests everything: the technical knowledge, the judgement under pressure, and the integrity when things get difficult. On every count, she was exactly who you needed in the room. She is someone you trust completely. That is not something you say lightly after twenty years."

Eddie Magee

Retired Corporate Banker

"I worked alongside Denise through some of the most demanding years in Lakeland's history. She brought genuine strategic thinking to every situation, backed by the kind of analytical rigour that meant nothing was left to chance. She is someone who raises the quality of the conversation in any room she is in."

Tadhg O'Halloran

Founder, [Company name]

"Denise understands the agri-food sector from the inside, and she understands what is at stake for the people in it. During the Brexit years she brought knowledge, persistence, and calm authority to some genuinely difficult conversations. She made a real difference to outcomes that mattered for farming families on both sides of the border."

Dr Mike Johnston MBE

Former CEO, Dairy Council for Northern Ireland

"During some of the most complex and consequential years in Lakeland's history, Denise was at the centre of the most demanding work the organisation faced. She brought strategic clarity, financial rigour, and genuine leadership to challenges that had no precedent. Her contribution to navigating Brexit, and to protecting the business and the farming families it served, was significant and lasting."

The Professional

I spent 33 years at Lakeland Dairies, one of Ireland's largest agri-food cooperatives. For 25 of those years I led the group finance function, with responsibility across audit, tax compliance, risk management, insurance, and all banking relationships and negotiations. In the final years I took on the group's most complex strategic projects, building expertise across tax restructuring, treasury management, international trade, SAP implementation, and merger accounting, always alongside the work of bringing people with me through change they did not always choose.

For the last chapter of that career I led the group's response to Brexit, the most complex regulatory and commercial challenge any Irish business faced in that period. That work took me across four jurisdictions simultaneously, into boardrooms, parliamentary committees, government departments, and farming communities on both sides of the border, fighting for outcomes that protected thousands of people.

I hold the designations FCA and FCT. I hold an ICF PCC Level 2 coaching credential with an Advanced Diploma in Systemic Thinking and Coaching. I currently serve as a Board Member and Chair of the Audit and Risk Subcommittee at InterTrade Ireland and as a Director and Committee Chair at Fishamble Theatre Company.

I know what it means to carry financial responsibility at scale, to govern under pressure, and to lead through years of genuine uncertainty. That experience is what I bring to every engagement.

The Human Dimension

But credentials are not why people work with me.

They work with me because I understand something that does not appear on any CV. That the most important decisions a leader makes are rarely the ones with clear answers, and that making them well requires a space where you can think without an audience, speak without consequence, and be challenged without judgement.

I have sat with senior executives facing restructuring they did not choose. I have worked with boards navigating governance questions that kept them awake at night. I have watched founders try to imagine a future beyond the business they spent thirty years building. In every case, what they needed was not another report or another recommendation. They needed someone who would stay in the room with them, calm, honest, and completely on their side.

That is what I do.

Why The Bradan Collective

The name comes from the bradán feasa, the Salmon of Knowledge in Irish mythology. The salmon does not give Fionn the answers. It carries the wisdom that allows him to find his own.

That is the right metaphor for this work. I do not arrive with a solution. I bring the depth of experience, the technical understanding, and the quality of attention that allows you to see your situation more clearly and act with greater confidence.

Wisdom and strategy for shifting tides.

How we work together

Executive Coaching & Mentoring

Executive Coaching & Leadership Mentoring

The higher you go, the fewer people you can speak to honestly. Your board has a governance relationship with you. Your team looks to you for certainty. Your peers are also your competitors. And the people closest to you outside work often carry enough of your stress already.

Coaching creates the space that does not otherwise exist. A confidential, structured conversation where you can think out loud, examine your assumptions, and make decisions with greater clarity and confidence. I will not tell you what to do. I will ask the questions that help you see what you already know but have not yet said out loud.

Some leaders call it sparring. Others call it mentoring, or coaching, or simply having someone in their corner. The name matters less than the quality of the thinking it produces.

Mentoring is different. It draws on over 33 years of financial leadership, governance, and strategic experience across some of the most complex challenges Irish business has faced. Where coaching opens the question, mentoring brings the hard-won knowledge that helps you find your way through it. Both have their place, and most senior leaders need both at different moments.

Who this is forCEOs, MDs, and senior leaders carrying decisions that cannot be delegated. Leaders in transition, whether into a new role, through a restructuring, or toward an exit. Board members who want to lead more effectively in the room.

What changesGreater clarity under pressure. Better decisions made with more confidence. The ability to lead without the weight of having no one to think with.

Fractional FD

Fractional Finance Director

Most medium-sized businesses do not need a full-time Finance Director. But there are moments, a major acquisition, a restructuring, a new market, a banking relationship that needs resetting, when they need exactly that level of financial thinking, and they need it now.

A Fractional Finance Director gives you senior financial leadership at the moment it matters most, without the cost or commitment of a permanent hire. I work alongside your existing team, building capability as we go, so that when the engagement ends your business is stronger than when it began.

I bring 33 years of financial leadership across audit, tax, treasury, international trade, systems, and governance. I have negotiated bank facilities, led SAP implementations, structured complex transactions across multiple jurisdictions, and managed the financial consequences of decisions that could not wait for perfect information.

Who this is forBusinesses between €5m and €100m turnover facing a financial challenge or transition that exceeds the current team's experience. Founders who need a trusted senior financial voice without a full-time commitment. Boards that want independent financial oversight at a critical moment.

What changesThe financial complexity gets managed. The knowledge is embedded, the systems are stronger, and the team is more confident facing something similar on their own in the future. I am not here to make myself indispensable. I am here to leave your business in a position where it no longer needs me.

Governance

Governance & Board Advisory

Good governance is not bureaucracy. It is the structure that allows a business to take risk confidently, manage uncertainty responsibly, and make decisions that hold up under scrutiny.

I bring independent governance expertise to boards and audit committees where technical depth matters. That includes audit and risk committee leadership, enterprise risk management, business continuity planning, and the governance questions that arise when a business is growing faster than its structures.

I currently serve as a Board Member and Chair of the Audit and Risk Subcommittee at InterTrade Ireland and as a Director and Committee Chair at Fishamble Theatre Company. I understand what good governance looks like from the inside of a boardroom, not just from a framework.

Who this is forBoards that need an independent voice with technical financial and governance expertise. Audit and risk committees being established or strengthened. Organisations navigating regulatory change or reputational risk.

What changesThe board functions with greater rigour and confidence. Risk is managed rather than avoided. Governance becomes a source of strength rather than a compliance burden.

Succession

NextGen Board Advisory & Succession

Succession is the hardest conversation in any family business or founder-led organisation. Not because people do not want to have it, but because it asks something profound of everyone involved.

For the founder or exiting leader, the first work is internal. Getting your own head ready for what letting go actually means, what you are handing over, what you are holding onto, and what the next chapter looks like for you. Once that clarity is there, the practical work follows: the governance structures, the board composition, and the leadership architecture that allows the business to continue well without you at the centre of it. I can help with both. Your tax advisers and lawyers will handle their side. My work is the part that sits between the personal and the structural.

For the next generation stepping into the business, often into a role their parent built and defined over decades, the challenge is unlike any other leadership transition. It is not just about capability. It is about identity, authority, and finding your own way of leading something that has never been yours before. I work with that generation in their language, on their terms, with the governance knowledge to help them understand the room they are walking into and the coaching presence to help them find their footing in it.

Who this is forFounders and family business owners planning an exit or succession in the next three to five years. Next generation leaders preparing to step into a role shaped by someone else. Boards managing a leadership transition that needs to go well for everyone.

What changesThe transition happens with clarity rather than conflict. The founder leaves on their own terms. The next generation steps forward with confidence. The business continues.

The Network

The Collective

The Bradan Collective is a sole practice. That is a deliberate choice. It means every client works directly with me, and that the advice they receive carries my name and my judgement behind it.

But no single adviser can cover everything a leader or a business might need. There are moments when the right answer sits in a specialist's hands. A tax question with real complexity, a wealth planning decision with long-term consequences, a people challenge that needs dedicated HR expertise, a legal matter that requires someone who knows the territory, a go-to-market question that needs someone who has been there before. In those moments, what matters is not just finding someone competent. It is knowing someone you would trust.

Over the course of a long career I have built relationships with professionals across a range of disciplines whose judgement I respect and whose standards I would put my name to. When a client's needs take them beyond what I do, I will say so honestly. And where I know the right person, I will make the introduction.

Where I do not know the right person, I will say that too. I will not recommend someone I cannot vouch for. That standard is the only thing that makes a recommendation worth having.

Writing

Insights

I have been writing about leadership, governance, and strategic complexity for some time now. Not to demonstrate expertise, though I hope the thinking stands up, but because the questions that matter most to senior leaders deserve more than a slide deck or a framework.

The articles here cover five broad territories: leadership and what it actually demands of the people who do it; financial and strategic leadership and the decisions that shape a business; the VUCA world leaders are navigating right now (VUCA stands for Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous); coaching, what it is, who it is for, and why it matters; and the Brexit series, which sits across all of them.

If you want to understand how I think, the Brexit series is probably the place to start.
